If you own or rent a home, you’ll likely face a clogged drain or two at some point or another. Sewer lines get clogged and plumbing problems come up, it's a fact of life.
So what exactly should you do in that instance?
Luckily there are several DIY hacks you can try before calling a professional plumber. In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about fixing a clogged drain in Toronto. Let’s jump right into it!
To DIY the solution for a clog in your home, it’s important to first note which type of drain it is first. The solutions will vary depending on whether the drain is located in your kitchen or bathroom. The reason for this is because different debris will be responsible for different types of clogs, which means it needs to be fixed accordingly.
More often than not, many homeowners and tenants experience a backed-up drain in their kitchen sink. This type of clog is generally caused by food buildup, however, oil can be the culprit as well.
In the instance that food or grease is responsible for the blockage, this can usually be handled by a couple of simple and natural ingredients. If you have baking soda and white vinegar stored away in your cupboard, this is the ideal option for unclogging a kitchen sink without the use of toxic chemicals. The vinegar and baking soda create a reaction together and can be very effective in clearing the clog.
So how is this done? Just pour one cup of baking soda down the clogged drain, followed immediately after by one cup of vinegar. Once the fizzing stops, allow the mixture to sit for about 15 minutes.
Once you’ve done that, run hot water into the sink to see if it’s cleared the problem. If things are running smoothly, then you should be good to go.
Shower drain clogs are generally the outcome of soap scum and hair accumulating over time. Fortunately, there are a couple of hacks you can try before calling a professional to remove the blockage.
The first thing you’ll want to do is try pouring boiling water down the drain to see if the problem resolves itself. A single kettle or pot full of water should be more than enough to get the job done. One thing to note is, this should only be attempted if your household has metal pipes. Never pour boiling water down PVC pipes - this could cause them to loosen and create problems in the future.
If the boiling water trick didn’t clear the clog, then snaking the drain is the next option. This hack is slightly less-than-pleasant, but it can often fix even the worst of clogs. First, straighten out a wire coat hanger and leave the hooked part on the end.
Next, be sure to remove any drain covers that your shower or tub may have, using a screwdriver if need be. Slowly extend the wire snake down the drain, removing any clogged debris from the pipe. Once the clog has been removed, pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain to be sure it’s completely cleared.
When you need to fix a clogged drain in a pinch, we know how tempting it can be to reach for chemical drain clears. All we have to say is - don’t do it. Not only are they harmful to the environment but they’ll also create more problems for you as a homeowner in the future. With regular use, the harsh hydrochloric acid in the drain cleaner can corrode your pipes over time, literally eating away at your plumbing system.
A damaged drain pipe would require a drain repair service which just increased your cost and headaches.
Now that you know a couple of tricks that can fix a clogged drain in your home, it’s important to know how to stop them from occurring in the future. After all, finding a solution to fix the problem is much more time-consuming than preventing it in the first place. The City Of Toronto has an extensive list of what not to put down your drain.

When you’re trying to wash dishes, there’s nothing worse than a sink full of dirty water that won’t drain. To prevent future clogs in your kitchen sink, you should always:
● Avoid putting food, grease, and coffee grounds down the drain.
● Put leftover food into the trash or compost, rather than the garburator.
● Pour leftover cooking grease into a separate container. Once it’s cooled, you can throw it in the garbage.
Nobody wants to start their day by turning on the shower, only to have the water quickly begin to pool around their feet. When it comes to preventing your shower drain from getting clogged, be sure to:
● Install a mesh screen or a
drain catcher in your shower or bathtub to prevent hair and other debris from entering the pipes.
● Always brush your hair before getting into the shower. This can prevent it from falling out in the shower when you shampoo and thus, clogging the drain.
● Every few weeks, pour a boiling kettle or pot of water down the drain for maintenance and prevention of future clogs. This will help clear the soap scum since no mesh cover can stop this residue from entering the pipes.
With all of that said, when is it safe to do-it-yourself and when should you call a
Toronto plumber to unclog a drain?
If a mess is accumulating fast or there are multiple clogged drains in your home, you’ll need to call a plumber to resolve the problem immediately. In situations like these, it’s never a good idea to try to fix it yourself because you could wind up with an even bigger problem on your hands. Sometimes a professional is the only one who can identify exactly what is causing the blockage in your pipes.
One effective method we offer is a
hydro jetting service. We use high pressure water to clear the drain as well as 'scrape' the inside walls of the drain to get rid of caked on sludge and debris. This actually 'wides' the passage way so less drain blockages occur in the future. It's a great solution for a blocked drain that keeps getting blocked.
